(Family Features) Whether your festivities include immediate family or bring together relatives from around the country, the holidays are about making memories with loved ones. From the first days of the season to the last, many families spend their precious time together with favorite activities and the best foods the holidays have to offer.
This year, you can change things up and start new traditions with a fresh ingredient like Envy apples, which provide an easy way to update classics due to their sweet taste and availability. The sweet, sophisticated flavor; uplifting, fresh aroma; delightfully satisfying crunch; beautiful appearance; and naturally white flesh that doesn’t brown as quickly as other apples all lend themselves to shareable recipes like this Apple Wreath Salad or Roasted Apple Macaroni and Cheese, both perfect for holiday parties. |

PITTSBURGH — Cheese boards are the ultimate party platter during the holidays, including on New Year’s Eve, because who among us doesn’t like to nibble a little of this and nosh a bit of that while sipping on a flute of Champagne?
Yet for the person in charge of assembling said board, especially one who can’t tell a sharp English cheddar from an aged Spanish Manchego, they can prove quite the stressor.
So many tastes and textures! And why does this one cost so much more than that one? It’s enough to drive you mad, or at the very least shake your confidence in being the perfect party host. |

Potlucks, cocktail parties, family gatherings and happy hours all require noshes and nibbles as well as libations. Now’s the time to make a plan.
This year, I’m diving into dips and spreads, the kind that are ready in minutes, can be made in big batches and served on demand. It helps, too, if they can be repurposed into sauces for meats and roasted vegetables or spreads for sandwiches, flatbreads and pizzas — and they’re perfect for dressing up leftovers.
For the most flavorful dips and spreads, look to the sunny cuisines of the Mediterranean. They’re bright with warm spices and comprise everyday ingredients you probably already have on hand. Based on contrasting flavors, colors and textures — sweet, tangy, spicy, creamy — these three dips taste surprisingly complex.

Coca-Cola discontinued its once-groundbreaking Tab diet soda three years ago and some hardy fans are actively trying to get the company to bring it back to retail shelves.
Last month, on a sunny fall Friday, a dozen of them from all over the country gathered at the World of Coca-Cola Museum and handed over a petition with 6,500 names and several handwritten pleas to a Coke executive, who came over from headquarters less than a mile away.
“We thought it would be fun to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Tab in Atlanta,” said Adam Burbach, a 41-year-old Lincoln, Neb., resident who organized the trip.
